Monthly Special: DeKuwaitization

Fifty years ago, if a man would walk in the streets wearing a shirt and jeans, he’d get awkward looks from people in the neighborhood. In Kuwait, the Dishdasha was the only suitable clothing for a man, and with time, the society started adapting new traditions as it engaged more with the rest of the world. The traditional clothing, Dishdasha for men and Abaya for women is now optional choices. Just as this concept of clothing was changed in the eyes of our society, so did other things… Read More

Man Howl

I think the moon has an effect on people, have you seen it? I’ve noticed that whenever it’s a full moon, people tend to be more aggressive and emotional; or maybe it’s just me. This year, we’ve welcomed 2010 with a lunar eclipse, and boy, did people define madness? . My friends wanted to hang out for the New Year eve, and because… Read More

Monthly Special: Sandy Clause

Monday, January 4th, 2010
Since elementary school and science teachers were telling us about the four seasons: summer, fall, winter and spring. When we were told that in fall, tree leaves turn yellow, we felt left out. Is it because we barely have trees? Or because they're always yellow? Either way, what's funny was the description of spring, the green fields, colorful flowers, charming butterflies, singing birds, dancing squirrels and the beautiful spring breeze. The scene wasn't so strange, we smiled as we remembered that we saw that vista, but not in Kuwait, it was in Disney's Cinderella.… Read More

Book Despair

Halloween: The western version of Girge'an. Children leave their houses on an exhilarating quest to satisfy their candy fantasies. There is only one -major- difference, though: In Girge'an, you sing for people to get candy, while in Halloween you scare them for the reward, which is something that I don't understand. Once again, this is goes under the many-things-that-I-don't-understand-in-this-world list. Last month's Halloween people were trick-or-treating in a book fair, Kuwait's 34th Book Fair. This would've been good if everyone was sticking to the treat part,… Read More

Everyone knows Super Mario. We remember him as the little Italian guy with a big thick mustache who eats a poisonous mushroom to turn to an adult (refer to Amanita Muscaria for more information) and jumps to smash random bricks for money while he is on a mission to save a medieval princess that was kidnapped by an overgrown turtle in a sewer. . The Arabian Gulf Street – Extended

Friday, September 25th, 2009
Do you know why I love this weather? The feeling you get when you're waiting in the Arabian Gulf Street for the car in front of you to crawl another inch as your car's windows are down, enjoying Kuwait's beautiful winter breeze by the gulf.  Aaah, the refreshing tones… A mixture of sequential horns, exhaust rattles and car engines' screams for help. . Kuwait is a country where guys hold hands and chase after women. Kuwait is a country where every person is judged by the color of his BlackBerry cover, and those who don’t have ones are outlaws. It is a place where vandalism is a beautiful thing. Kuwait is a country where every ‘No Smoking’ sign is read "Go Smoking"... . The history… Read More

If we ask any guy what’s your plans for this weekend? The answer will be “Gaz” with the guys (Chilling out). If we ask where, it’ll be either going to a mall to watch a movie, going to a mall for dinner, or just going to a mall for spinning around and around like some sort of a pilgrimage. . My friends who study abroad in the… Read More
