Knocking On Heaven’s Door

An important, yet saddening, aspect and experience in life is the death of a family member or a friend. A truly shattering experience that could strike any human’s emotional core. Depression, hopelessness, defeat and loneliness are one of the few initiating responses that we feel when a person who we truly care for dissolves to the unknown. Our ability to love is one of mankind’s greatest inheritance that comes with its own philosophy. It is a gift and it is a curse but it is also one of life’s elemental pillars. After all, we are the poignant creation of the Superdesigner.

.

My father, my mother and more recently, my very good friend, are victims of the wicked game called love. They have all experienced the loss of their father: the home bearer. Personally, the mere thought of losing anyone seems so superficial that such an event would seem mythical: unreal. It is an act of god when someone who we love passes away and our body reacts by producing one of the essential sources of life: water. Our tears are the physical recognition, our sadness is the spiritual rendition and our love for them is the unbreakable condition. We are forever slaves of emotion.

.

Death is such a dramatic and mournful time in all of our lives. How do we ever get the courage to move on? Do we simply stop loving the people we have lost? Do we act as if it never happened? Do we even want to know that it happened? What is the solution to this conundrum? The answer is simple as it is beautiful. We are designed to integrate and elevate our feelings with individuals who we have cherished our lives with. However, we are also given the mental entity to encounter their loss. Sad? Yes. Harsh? God knows best.

.

My father once told me he buried his own father with his two hands. I questioned as to how he felt in doing so. This is what he replied: “It may be the most undesirable thing to do in life, but parents who are buried respectfully by the hands of their own offspring are the luckiest ones to be”. The thought is undeniably scary and disheartening but it’s the cycle of life. Our parents bring us into this world, we grow into their shoes and when the time comes we dutifully and respectfully honour them by burying them with our God-given hands. It is one of the most blissful and crestfallen moments of nature.

.

The only conclusive remark is to love and enjoy the moments with the people around you. Death can be an unexpected tragedy or a long awaited punishment, and it is there to remind us of our mortality. Also remember that surpassing death does not mean you have lost that person for all infinity: they are always there hidden in your heart. Transient is this journey in life, where our bodies are the vessels for our souls; it is our experiences, our attached bonds and our intentions for which we are recognized eternally. Love, be loved and aspire to spread the love. Amen.
